Joan Eleanor Headley Petersen

July 10, 1939 - February 7, 2011

Joan Eleanor Headley Petersen of New Ulm, Texas passed away on February 7th in New Ulm, Texas after a hard fought battle with cancer. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday February 12th 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Industry United Methodist Church in Industry, Texas with Pastor Liz Kevilus officiating.
She was born on July 10, 1939, to Rev. A. Dean Headley and Harriet Peirce Headley in Mitchell, South Dakota and grew up in Minnesota. She graduated magna cum laude from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. She was employed as a psychiatric nurse at the University of Minnesota Hospital and hospitals in San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, continuing in this field for twelve years. During the eleven years before retiring she worked as a coder in the Memorial Hermann Health Care System in Houston.
She married Frank Petersen on October 9, 1970.
Survivors include her husband, Frank of New Ulm, brothers Art (Liz) and Joel Headley of Twig, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents, A. Dean and Harriet Headley and stepson, Troy Petersen.
She was a member of the Industry United Methodist Church and had been a member of the handbell choir. She volunteered regularly for seven years at Brenham Humane Services and was affectionately known there as the Cat Lady. She felt strongly that her most important work was to find adoptive homes for as many animals as possible.
