Verina Georg Zatopek

June 22, 1936 - September 26, 2020

Verina Georg Zatopek, age 84, died on September 26, 2020 in Columbus, Texas. She was born to Walter and Elsie (Werland) Georg on June 22, 1936 in Columbus, Texas.

Verina grew up with one sister, Bernice (now deceased), outside of Columbus. Having no brothers, Clyde Werland, their cousin, was their "brother figure". The three of them went to Brushy School, where many days, they would ride with their teacher, Mrs. Frances Dungen, after school to Cummins Creek and then walk to Bernice and Verina's house where Clyde often stayed. The families were very close. Verina's favorite place to go on Saturday night was to "Aunt Minnie's (Werland)".

After Brushy Schoool, she went to Columbus High School, where she graduated from. She then went to work at Zatopek's Feed Store as bookkeeper.

She later went to work at The Columbus Medical Clinic where she remained for about 30 years. To this day, she is a true friend with Dr. R.C. Marburger, who has faithfully remained in contact with her in her retirement years. She was known to have "trained" the doctors who later joined the clinic.

Verina loved people and is remembered by many clinic paitents as the warm and kind hearted lady she was.

In 1962, she married Lanny Ross Zatopek and they lived in Columbus until he passed on in 1969. She had no children.

After Lanny's death, she remained living in Columbus and working at the clinic. She could often be seen walking to and from work as she did daily.

She was very passionate about her yard and flowers. As long as she could get outside, she continued caring for her yard and flowers. She could even be seen out there with her walker raking leaves. Her yard and flowers were always pristine. No matter how many flowers she had, there was always room for more.

Having had no children of her own, she thoroughly enjoyed the children of her great nephews. No matter how bad she felt, the mention of Addie and Lawson Werland would always make her smile.

The last few months had been very trying for her. When she realized that she needed help, she went to The Oaks Assisted Living. She was there less than a month when she was taken to the hospital with an infection in her blood. She had been in hospitals and the Columbus Community Care since.

All the while, she was worrying about needing to get out in her yard.

Verina was preceded in death by: her parents, Walter and Elsie Georg; husband, Lanny Ross Zatopek; sister, Bernice Georg Glascock; brother-in-law, Ray Glascock; and numerous cousins.

Verina is survived by: cousins, Clyde A. Werland, Patsy Schlichting-Truett and husband James, Larry A. Werland, Sr. and wife Judy, Dawn W. Pavalock and husband Gary, Judy Georg Wick and husband Mike, Edna Supak, Dorothy Garcia and Helen Jones.
