Calvin Roensch

February 24, 1943 - August 25, 2020

Calvin Roensch, 77, of Bernardo, Texas passed away on August 25, 2020, in Columbus, Texas.

Calvin was born in La Grange, Texas on February 24, 1943 to Willie C. and Alma (Michalk) Roensch. He moved to the Bernardo community from Weimar when he was in the fifth grade. He attended Bernardo School and graduated from Columbus High School in 1961, where he played football, baseball and was a member of the FFA.

Calvin served six years in the Texas National Guard, attaining the rank of Sgt. He was a Charter member of the Columbus Volunteer Ambulance when it was organized and a member of the Columbus Little League Association, serving as a coach, umpire and as its President. His special interest along with coaching Little League, was working with the Annual Little League Barbeque, which he did for over 40 years. He was a member of the Bernardo Volunteer Fire Department for over 40 years. Calvin was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

His love of sports led him to become a coach of the Bernardo Bears Amateur Baseball Team, winning many championships in the South Central Texas Amateur League. He helped build baseball fields in Columbus and the Bears Den at Mentz.

He was a very loyal Columbus Cardinal Football fan, and with his wife, they never missed a Friday Night football game, wherever it was and they were season ticket holders since 1965. Highlights were his son's 1991 Cardinals undefeated regular season team and his grandson's 2019 Cardinals state semifinalist team.

His many hobbies and interests were hunting, fishing, ranching, barbequing, chili cookoffs and the baseball Rotisserie League with friends in Columbus and the surrounding area. He spent many hours barbequing and cooking for family functions, church functions, reunions, Little League, Fire Departments, BBQ cookoffs, but never without a cold Shiner beer.

Calvin worked for the Texas Highway Department when IH 10 was being constructed and then went to work for Horton & Horton sand & gravel. The knowledge he gained from sand & gravel excavation led him to a career as a salesman of industrial supplies afforded to him by Ed Kalinowski of Victoria Bearing in 1974. He traveled all over South Texas and his success led to the expansion of the company and to the opening of Columbus Bearing & Industrial Supply in his own home town.

In addition to his regular employment as a salesman, in the early 70's, Calvin also owned a grocery store/service station (the old Gross' Store at FM 949 and IH10) which was operated by his dad, and later by his sister. He also sold Woodmen of the World life insurance.
In 2000 Calvin accepted a position of Area Manager for Hewitt-Robins, an idler company in Alabama, and his territory was the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas. He worked for Hewitt-Robins for 9 years until his retirement and was recognized as the top area manager in the United States for each of those 9 years.

His ability to sell was a gift and it enabled him to have lasting friendships all over Texas and beyond.

After his retirement, the majority of his time was spent with his grandsons Jackson and Kaldon hunting, fishing, and checking cows.

Calvin is survived by his wife Sharon Kay Roensch; son Troy Roensch and wife Sandi; grandchildren Jackson Roensch and Kaldon Roensch; sister Florence Jurajda and husband Bill of Columbus; sisters-in-law Peggy Roensch of Victoria, Carolyn Foster and husband Lester of Columbus, Marilyn Nelson of Columbus and Iris Sue Strauss of New Ulm; brothers-in-law Lee Roy Wenske of Columbus, Earnest Peikert of Columbus, Gerion Nelson and wife Pauline of Bernardo, Kenneth Nelson and wife Bonnie of Bernardo and Murray Nelson of Bernardo.
