Ruby Matthews Darnell was called to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 2, 2020 at her place of residence in Eagle Lake, Texas.

Ruby leaves behind her grandchildren Kayla Farmer, married to Travis Farmer, and Kenneth Brinkmann; great-grandchildren Aaron Farmer and Alison Brinkmann; sister and brother in law, Melvin and Joyce Stancik; nieces and nephews David Hunt, Debby Turley, James Story, Michael and Tammy Story, Darrell and Christi Stancik, Darlene and Jeff Argo, Jodie Lee Matthews, Julie Ann Matthews, Sharron Elizabeth Matthews, John Stockton; plus many great nephews and nieces; along with the best neighbors anyone could have asked for, dear friends Charlie and DJ, plus many other friends in the Eagle Lake community.

She is preceded in death by the love of her life of over 50 years, husband, Charles Darnell, her parents, Milton Lee Matthews and Berttie Stockton; her son Johnnie Lee Darnell and brother John Thomas Matthews.

Ruby was born on August 29, 1941 in Schulenburg, Texas to Milton Lee Matthews and Berttie Stockton. She grew up in the area alongside her siblings, graduating from Rice High School in 1960. She went on to pursue a degree in Education obtaining it from South West Texas State. After graduation, she met the love of her life, Charles Lee Darnell. They got married and started a family. They had one son, Johnnie Lee Darnell.

She took a job with Rice CISD, leading them to plant their roots in Eagle Lake. Ruby's passion was teaching. Throughout her career she touched base on all subjects. Teaching all primary grades, special education, as well as adult night classes, and many other aspects in the teaching realm. She held a special gift of knowing how to pass knowledge on, making it interesting and fun. Even after she retired, everyone throughout town knew Mrs. Ruby, from the primacy school. You either were blessed to have had her or knew someone who had.

Teaching wasn't her only passion in life. She was a life member of The First Baptist Church of Eagle Lake. She was always intertwined with the church whether it be Sunday school, luncheons, food pantry, bible school; the list could just go on. Through her acts of compassion, she passed her love for God down to children as well.

A private service will be held on May 7, 2020 at Lakeside Cemetery for immediate family with Pastor Erik Lankford officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date yet to be determined.

Flowers may be delivered to Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus, Texas or Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake, Texas on May 7, 2020.

Donations can be made in her name to the First Baptist Church of Eagle Lake, P.O. Box 339, Eagle Lake, TX. 77434.
