August "Jr." Mrkwa

August 9, 1948 - March 23, 2019

August "Jr" Mrkwa, 70, of Eagle Lake, Texas, passed away on March 23, 2019 in Eagle Lake, Texas.

He was born on August 9, 1948 to August Mrkwa and Jennie Meyer Mrkwa in Columbus, TX. On December 14, 1974 he married Patsy Knetig in Sweeny, Texas and moved to Eagle Lake, Texas, and in September 1979, they had a daughter, Frances.

For most of his adult life, Jr worked at Farm and Ranch Aerial Service in Eagle Lake as an aircraft mechanic. He began there at the age of 16 along with his brother-in-law, Johnny Garza. He loved the airport; the challenge of working on the planes, the knowledge he gained from learning about crops, the friendships he made and the farmers he got to know. He later went to work at Kallina Dryer in Altair, Texas where he was employed until his retirement. In Jr's typical fashion, he was a hard and conscientious worker at the dryer and thought of everyone at Kallina's as family and formed many friendships there.

Jr never met a stranger and would help anyone whenever they needed it in any way he could. He loved to talk about farming and gardening. He was one of those men who knew something about almost everything. He saw a lot of the country during his years at Farm & Ranch, traveling to pick up parts and materials for planes. He was a tinkerer and enjoyed making handmade knives in his backyard shop. He loved to make homemade sausage and was always trying new recipes and techniques.

Most of all, Jr loved being "PawPaw" to his two grandsons, Jackson and Cole. He enjoyed spending time with them and his family at his camphouse near Cummins Creek. Jr will be always remembered for his bar-b-ques and fish fry's at the "creek".

He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus in Eagle Lake, TX and spent many years volunteering his time to the Colorado County Fair.

August is survived by his spouse Patsy Knetig Mrkwa of Eagle Lake, TX; daughter Frances Cline and husband Conrad of Bellville, TX; sister Evelyn Orange of Mentz, TX; brother John William Mrkwa of Weslaco, TX; and two grandchildren Jackson Lee and Cole Cline.

He was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother Frances Meyer, his father August Mrkwa, mother Jennie Meyer Mrkwa, sister Emilie Garza and brothers-in-law Eddie Orange and Johnny Garza.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 29, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus, Texas.

Parish prayer service, Knights of Columbus Rosary and Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 29, 2019 at 7:00 PM at Henneke Funeral Home with Michael Rucka officiating the rosary and Deacon Doug Tromblee officiating the memorial service.

Jr was a generous man, he would always say how much he loved helping others. In that respect, memorials may be given to the charity of your choice.
