I am a Veteran.Grover McRae Gross

January 1, 1928 - March 17, 2019

Grover McRae Gross of Columbus, age 91, died peacefully at his home Sunday morning March 17. Born January 1, 1928 to Otto Louis and Meta Bock Gross, McRae attended elementary school in Bernardo and high school in Columbus, graduating with the class of 1945.

An only child, he grew up close to the family business, a cafe/filling station/country store east of Columbus at the intersection of Highway 90 and FM 949. The area eventually became known as Gross's Corner.

He served with the 8th Army Occupation Force in Japan after WWII.

He married Ruth Youens in Columbus on June 4, 1949. At the time, McRae worked at his parents' store and Ruth was employed by First State Bank. McRae began his career in the petrochemical industry with Humble Oil in Baytown, followed by the Goliad Corporation and Mobil Oil at the Wilcox gasoline refinery at Provident City. The family, now increased by the addition of Michael Robert (1951) and Jean Elizabeth (1953) moved back to Columbus and then to Weimar, where they remained throughout the children's school years. McRae and Ruth built their dream home on the river west of Columbus in 1972.

He retired from Mobil Oil Corporation after 30 years' service at the Wilcox plant, becoming a part-time rancher and full-time gardener. Following Ruth's death on January 10, 2017, McRae continued to live at home until the end. He received tremendous support from his daughter Jean and a wide network of friends and extended family too numerous to list.

He is survived by son Mike (Christine) of Garfield County, Colorado, daughter Jean Howze (Harmon) of Round top, two first cousins, Weldon Neuendorff of Brenham and Virgil Neuendorff of League City, and 8 nieces and nephews from his wife's family.

At McRae's request, cremation will be followed by a private interment at Odd Fellows Rest in Columbus. Please consider making a donation to the charity of your choice.
