Dorris Ross Childs

March 2, 1928 - December 28, 2018

Dorris (Powers) Ross Childs passed away, Friday, December 28th, in Columbus, TX. She was born March 2, 1928, in the community of Blue Ridge (Marlin, TX) to Herchel and Arrilla Powers. She was the eldest daughter with six siblings. After graduating Marlin High and a semester in TCWU, she met and soon married, Troy Ross, a young soldier just returning to town. Together they set out to Houston to find work and establish their home. Dorris was fortunate to have the opportunity to settle into the insurance field in which she worked for many years, while Troy worked at Southwestern Bell. Their first home was in Bellaire. After their 3rd child, the desire to raise their family in a rural environment led them to property outside of Katy. Within 8 brief years of establishing their ranch home and the arrival of another child, Troy passed away. As a child of the depression, Dorris developed a "can't quit attitude" which pushed her on to maintain and build on their dreams.

Dorris devoted her life to supporting her family and building close friendships. Seldom did she miss the opportunity to stop and inquire about someone or something. Those conversations kept the twinkle in her eye and encouraged further discussion (or reading) on the topic. She was a lady of dignity and beauty who loved to give token gifts and write letters to family and friends. Though money was always tight, she managed to plan trips out-of-state, to historical sites, and museums. Two action titles best describe her: avid-learner and goal-setter. Every day she had an agenda with high standards. However, there was always time to keep up with the latest in politics (which she loved to debate) and faithfully support a friend's craft show, when it supported a worth cause.

Dorris was a devoted member and volunteer in the United Methodist Church (UMW), public libraries, food pantries and clothes closets in Katy, Cedar Park, and Marlin.

Dorris was preceded in death by her father, Herchel (1968) and Arrilla Powers (1977); husbands, Troy Ross (1968) and Darrell Childs (2001); siblings Hershel M. (baby), Richard W. (2016), Thomas D. (2011), and Faye Hagner (2014).
