Stephen "Steve" Wayne Potter

July 17, 1952 - March 8, 2018

Stephen Wayne “Steve” Potter, 65, passed away on March 8, 2018 at his residence surrounded by loved ones.

Steve was born on July 17, 1952 to Lester and Doris (Davis) Potter in Columbus, Texas. He was a 1970 graduate of Columbus High School and attended Wharton County Junior College. On September 29, 1984, Steve married Brenda Rucka of Eagle Lake, TX and lovingly gave her the name “Pearl”.

Steve worked in the rice fields at an early age with his Uncle LD where he acquired the nickname “muddy buddy”. He was always on a horse at an early age and then graduated to become a champion rodeo cowboy. He worked for Grimes Grass Company for 22 years as Vice President of Turf Management, before retirement.

Steve was a lifelong resident of Columbus, Texas. He was a true cowboy that also enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking, and being with family and friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Doris Potter Graham, and step- father, Raymond Graham; parents-in-law Ervin (Shorty) Rucka, Barbara Rucka Davis and step-father-in-law Preston Davis.

Steve is survived by his wife of 33 years, Brenda Potter, his sons Taylor Potter of New Braunfels, TX; Zachary Potter of Columbus, TX; sister Deborah Potter Tolliver and husband, Stephen H. Tolliver of Boerne, TX; Brothers in-law and their spouses Michael and Sylvia Rucka; Gary and Lynn Rucka, and David Rucka all of Eagle Lake, TX; Brian and Lynn Rucka of East Bernard, TX; Sisters in-law and their spouses Ramona and Cliff Ray of Eagle Lake, TX; Linda and Leonard DeOto of Tucson, AZ; Denise and Michael Thompson of Garwood, TX; Loretta Zajic of East Bernard, TX; Karen and Randy Epps of Columbus, TX; Beverly and Jon Wunderlich of Weimar, TX; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Steve loved being a part of the Patriots and Heroes Outdoors program for the past 8 years. He touched the lives of many of “America’s True Heroes”, our service men and women, over the years and was deeply grateful for their service. Steve attended the Acts Retreat for Men in 2012 and his life was forever changed. He often served as a “silent worker” in prayer due to his health, but hoped the program would continue to grow so others could feel the love, grace, and peace of the LORD.
