We just found out about the passing of Hal. When my family and I moved here 20 years ago, Hal was one of the first people that I became acquainted with. For many years, we played golf together on Wednesdays and Saturdays. He was great story teller, had a god wit, and always had a kind word of encouragement for my sons. People just enjoyed being around him. Life circumstances changed and we did not get to see each other often during the past 10 years. We are saddened by his passing and are very sorry for your loss. Please accept our condolences.

I was blessed to have met Mr. Smith thru my friendship with Dan. I am thankful for the time he shared with us and now for his eternal comfort. The legacy he leaves behind pays tribute to a good man every day. May the heartache you may feel today be washed away by the fond memories of his time with you...

I met Hal when I was teaching at Columbus Elementary and coaching baseball at the high school. I cherish every minute that I was able to spend with Hal talking about baseball. He even brought his grandson to the high school bullpen a few times while he was in the minors. I wish I had written down everything he said about the game. Though I moved to another town and hadnt seen Hal in years, I feel a tremendous loss with his passing as I will never hear his stories again.

The other condolences all expressed the same message - that Hal was a positive influence in their lives. Well done, good and faithful servant.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I met Hal at a Pittsburgh Pirate 1960 reunion. What a gentleman he was. He was also a good singer with Elroy Face. I have there record album. Rest in peace Hal.

Dear family,

I was in 5th grade in South Fayette township in PA when Hal hit that home run in the eighth inning against the Yankees. Maz got all of the accolades from his home run but it would have never occurred without Hal's homer in the eighth. Of course, you all know that. But I wanted to tell you that although I moved to Kansas in 1969, I still and always will remember the HR that Al hit that day.

God bless all of his family and I pray that Al passed peacefully in the arms of the Lord.

I met Hal at a Pirate fantasy camp. He was my team manager and he was the nicest guy and it was joy to play for him. He told great stories from his playing days (including his home run in game 7 of the 1960 series) that added to the fantasy camp experience. When he goes on to play his next game I hope he goes four for four and catches a no-hitter. For his family and friends my sympathies for your loss.

To Debbie, Dan and all of Hal's beautiful family I send my heartfelt condolences to you all. I have such fond memories of going to your house with Debbie while growing up in Briargrove Park and it was especially fun watching the World Series with your dad, Dan, Mike and the whole family. I always felt welcome! Your dad will be sorely missed by many. You all are in my thoughts and prayers. Rest In Peace Hal ❤.
